This is where most projector money is wasted. Brightness is measured in ANSI lumens, a standard that averages light across nine points of the image. But cheap projectors — and even some mainstream ones — advertise plain "lumens," "LED lumens," or "lux" instead, which are unregulated and routinely inflated three to fifteen times over real output. Several brands have faced lawsuits over it. Samsung's own Freestyle markets 550 "lumens" against a measured figure closer to 230 ANSI.

The rule: if the listing does not say "ANSI lumens," treat the brightness number as fiction. As a rough guide, plan for roughly 1,500–2,000 ANSI lumens in a fully dark room, 2,500–3,000+ if the room has some ambient light, and at least 400 for outdoor viewing after dark.
